JUMBO UPDATE 13 DECEMBER 2013

I was so proud of my Jumbo team led by Louise (and supervised by Catherine) whilst I was away in Joburg as they took on the mammoth task of laying the concrete slab over one weekend. You can’t order deliveries of concrete here so it is literally done with manual labour loading wheel barrows of sand, stone and cement into a little concrete mixer and then taking the mix with wheel barrows to the site and pouring whilst the building team compact using timber pl...

JUMBO UPDATE FRIDAY 6TH DECEMBER 2013

We woke up this morning to the sad news of the passing of one of the world’s great men Nelson Mandela. I think that President Obamas comment that he was a truly good person probably sums him up in one word. We all know of his great achievements with humans, reconciliation in a very volatile situation in South Africa, his great work with charities to ease the suffering of fellow South Africans and his great achievements as a statesman but I am not ...

JUMBO UPDATE 15 NOV 2013

This week has been a week of hellos and goodbyes.  Obviously with it being Moses’s anniversary we did think of him and our final good bye a lot more than normal and coincidently I had to travel to Mzuzu on business which of course is the city where we went to collect Moses in the first place so the drive brought back many memories of our drive to go and collect Moses, my thoughts at the time, the feeling of anticipation and of course the long drive back through t...

JUMBO UPDATE 8 NOVEMBER 2013

Yesterday morning we had a little weaver bird fly into the house and Catherine watched in awe as I raced Mr Wilson the cat to rescue him. Mr Wilson (so named because as a tiny kitten he would put his ears flat down when he got cross and he looked a bit like Mr Wilson from Denis the menace with his hat pulled down) is extremely quick and agile and it was a serious sprint from me to get to the bird who had flown onto a louver window and catch it milliseconds b...

Jumbo update 25 October 25, 2013

Barn scaffolding is down with no dramas and the team is busy preparing the ground for building of the foundations and concreting in of the poles. Stupidly and over enthusiastically I dug the foundations far too early and we had to cover up quite a few trenches to be able to erect poles and scaffolding which we have to reopen as well as compact the ground ( sure my team think I am a real nutcase!)

We had a bit of a fright last week when we had really...

Jumbo update 18th October 2013

We are back into the hot, dry, dusty and windy time of the year when both man and animal start to look anxiously at the sky searching for the first signs of rain clouds. Tempers of both man and animal are normally more frazzled at this time of year commonly known this part of the world as suicide month but somehow as soon as the first storm starts to build the whole atmosphere is charged with electricity and anticipation and those first drops of rain smell so...

JUMBO UPDATE 11 OCTOBER 2013

This week I thought I would chat about our feathered friends as I am greeted every morning just as the sun starts to rise in the sky by a lovely chorus of bird song. We have a huge colony of weavers who nest in the palm trees and bamboo that overhangs our rather large pond. This colony grows in number every year as the parents from last year come back together with their grown up offspring and the number of nests this year is probably close to a thousand.  I dr...

JUMBO UPDATE 20 September 2013

I am writing todays update with my WAR (Wildlife At Risk) hat on.

A few months ago a lovely lady Christina Russo sent me an email.  She is a journalist and conservationist who is passionate about doing something to create awareness for the plight of elephants and had met a good friend Dr Catherine Wood in the USA who had suggested that she contact me.  Christina was wanting to do research on elephant orphanages and whether they were still relevant in today...

JUMBO UPDATE 13 SEPT 2013

We start off our update this week by thinking of our American supporters, particularly those of you who lost loved ones in the dreadful 9/11 tragedy.  I know that whilst time does heal the pain of loss the scar is always there and I would ask you all to spare a moment to think of those people all around the world who carry that burden of loss and the elephant families who suffer the same emotional traumas as we do when they suffer a loss.

Our little Jumbo baby Catherine had her first birthday this week and it really brought back memories of the day that we brought the tiny little preemie baby home and the events leading up to this.

For the last 18 months or so we have been sending moringa leaf powder up to Tanzania for a little ele called Mr Brrr. Moringa is a great immune booster, source of protein, calcium and vitamin C all of which are very important in an eles  diet and is used quite extensively with malnourished babies. Our post today is a tribute to Sheba a brave and loving dog who gave humans a 2nd chance.

A few years ago I was contacted by Lee Stewart and Bev Trataris of the LSPCA about Sheba a beautiful mature Rhodesian ridgeback.  Initially Sheba had been brought in by a young American who was about to leave Malawi. He had been out running one day when Sheba followed him home and he had spent the last week trying to find her owners with no luck and as he was leavin...

JUMBO UPDATE 2 AUGUST

I remember my Mother telling me that everything happens for a reason although we may not understand the reason at the time and this has come true on a number of occasions – asking Clover for her contact details and for the ele milk formula for example. This week has once again proven the old saying. My saga started 2 weeks ago when little Poley the duiker was picked up and brought to us by Darren. My initial plan was to stabilise her and get her drinking well and th...

Saturday was a wonderful day for us at Jumbo. After a week of cold miserable weather the sun came out to shine and little Catherine didn’t freeze in her beautiful christening dress that God mother Wendy gave her. God mother Colleen and Louise produced a magnificent array of snacks and God father Michael drove all the way from Zomba at the crack of dawn to be there on time. We are all very concerned about the information that Matt has received and confirmed about Asian gentlemen approaching people to go into Kasungu national park to poach elephants.  The poachers are generally very well armed and Matts organisation is still very new and whilst extremely professional they are still short of military trained personal and of course funding is always an issue.  We at Jumbo and Marleen from WAR are trying to assist where ever possible...

Jumbo update 15 March 2013

This week I thought we could chat about the various small antelope that have shared their infancy with us. Small antelope can survive in relatively small areas of bush, tend to live on leaves, grass and fruit and so are not hugely destructive to crops and as a result can co-exist pretty well with humans and are found all over the country. When they are under threat the babies lie down quietly in the grass whilst the mothers try to outrun the threat and as a resu...

The sourcing of the blue gum poles that I need for the roof structure and for the uprights to fix the roof onto is proving to be a major battle. Today I thought we would go back to reminiscing about animals that have shared our life in the past.  Over the years we have had a number of lesser bush babies or night apes as they are more commonly known and their bigger cousins the galago or bush baby. These little guys are often orphaned as the tree in which their mother has built a nest for them is chopped down for firewood. As their names suggest they are nocturnal creatures, sleeping all day and waking up ...

Moses is stable at the moment. He has his energy levels back and is once again a cheeky little elephant who rules the roost. He is still very thin and gets tired easily - just like any one of us that has been through a big op, but at least we are no longer needing to give him daily drips and the seesaw of improvements back to crashing seems to have slowed down. We have been able to give Moses the best possible vet care and nursing due to the generosity of our friends. An additional donation f...

Moses update 17 August

This week started off with Moses hitting rock bottom ( well at least we hope that this was rock bottom and that he will not sink to this level or lower again!!). Seeing him lying on the floor of the kitchen with the 1000 yard stare in his eyes, Matimat and Jim holding him and crying gave me a huge shock as I ran into the house. When I look at a sick or injured animal the first thing I do is look into the eyes as if the eyes are still bright and alert the animal is s...

Moses operation

Moses update 7 August

This week has been an emotional rollercoaster as Moses had his hernia op last Tuesday.  We started Moses on penicillin injections twice daily on Monday night in preparation for his op – this has made us all very unpopular as he does not appreciate injections at all and is intelligent enough to see me preparing the syringe and start running away but it is a necessary evil to give him every chance of fighting any possible infection...

Moses update 27 July

As Moses is growing up he is developing a stronger and stronger character, once again very like little humans who start to dictate more and more what they do and do not like.

He has very definite views with regard to people and who should be with him at what time.  In the mornings Matimat is the person of choice and he greets him with a very loud rumble as he comes in to work in the morning and immediately abandons me for Matimat, mid morning to mid afternoon hi...

Moses update 20 July

This week has been an amazing week for donations for Moses.

Kate McGowan, Craig Christie and Lina Glissman organized a dog show in Zomba and raised K23500 for us. This is a sterling effort by 3 young children who initiated and ran the event and it is really heart warming to see children with such a commitment to helping others.

Leon Swart had his 60th birthday party and asked his guests to please make donations for Moses rather than give him birthday presents...

Moses update 13 July

Posted by Jenny Webb on Friday, July 13, 2012,

Moses didn’t have his operation over the weekend as Dr Parsons had to reschedule due to an urgent situation in Zambia. We are continuing to monitor his hernia and whilst on the one hand it will be a relief when it is all over I cant help but think that every week we wait he is a bit older and a bit stronger.

We went on a Moses shopping spree last weekend and bought him 8 new little blankets – he uses 5 blankets at a time during the later half of the night and on some nights he mana...

Moses update 5 July

Moses has had an interesting week with some highs and lows. My daughter Cheryl has been home on holiday from Uni and so he has had another person to entertain him and find new things for him to play with – a soft toy that he likes to run his trunk over and put its tail in his mouth especially when he feels a little sleepy and in need of some cuddling, a large exercise ball from Les Bond that he is learning to roll around ( and hopefully start to chase in time) and ne...

Moses up date 29 June

Posted by Jenny Webb on Thursday, July 5, 2012,

Moses continues to get stronger and develop more of a character every week. He is now playing a lot more with his “horse ball”, he has discovered that if he picks it up with his trunk and bounces it on the floor that it makes a noise so it is now his favourite toy again and he carries it around with him quite a lot, bouncing it every now and then – especially in the early hours of the morning when I am trying to get him to go back to sleep. Thank goodness he does go straight to sleep a...

MOSES UP DATE 22 JUNE

Posted by Jenny Webb on Friday, June 22, 2012,

As I write this update I notice that yesterday was our shortest day of the year and in theory the middle of winter – seriously hope it starts warming up soon. I know that for many of you in colder climates this probably sounds very silly but at 3 am when Moses and I are wandering around the kitchen warming up bottles it does seem very cold especially as our houses are not geared for cold weather. The one positive is that with the cold weather Moses does like to snuggle up even closer tha...

Moses Update 15 June

Posted by Jenny Webb on Friday, June 15, 2012,

This past week has brought a lot of amusement to the carers as Moses starts to explore his “family” and seems to be relating what he finds to himself. It started off with him spending a long time in the middle of the night exploring my face with his trunk and then exploring his own face. He felt all over my face and then all over his, felt my eyes then felt his, tried to put his trunk in my mouth and then in his, pulled and felt my ears and then his and then he got to my nose……. He th...

MOSES UP DATE 8 JUNE

Posted by Jenny Webb on Monday, June 11, 2012,

Moses has had a busy week. He had visitors on Saturday and Sunday, I have had Justin staying with us for a week and so he has made a new friend and Gina has joined our team. We do restrict the visitors to a maximum of 2 at a time, visitors do not invade his space and leave it up to him to decide if he wants to come and say hello and strictly no children as their high voices and energy do upset him. I do sometimes feel mean sticking to these rules but M...

Update 31st May - three months old

Posted by Jenny Webb on Wednesday, June 6, 2012,

Moses is continuing to explore his world, he is a bit taller now and his trunk a bit longer so he can reach new heights ……. Food can no longer be left on the dining room table unattended as the plates crashing down after a “trunk investigation’ create entertainment, he can now reach up to the lower shelf of the bar so everything has moved up a level. He loves carrying things around in his trunk, a little basket is one of his favourite toys and money holds a huge attraction, coi...

UPDATE 25 May 2012

Posted by Jenny Webb on Wednesday, June 6, 2012,

Moses had his first proper elephant bath where he went into his paddling pool on his own and started splashing himself with water using his trunk. He started off slowly splashing small amounts onto his front legs and then got really excited and started swishing his trunk harder and faster through the water creating a really big splash and then went onto slapping the water with his trunk so I think we have finally got him over his fear of water but it will probably take a bit more time...

MOSES UPDATE 18 May 2012

Posted by Jenny Webb on Wednesday, June 6, 2012,

Moses continues to develop day by day – like a young child he is learning about his body and what different parts do primarily his trunk which is such an intricate part of an elephant..

He is becoming much more adept with his trunk ( it is also becoming so much stronger if he wants my hand in his mouth now I cannot stop him from putting it there.) Elephants show affection by running their trunks over each other and putting their trunks into other eles mouths.

He has started to p...

Update 16th April 2012

Posted by Jenny Webb on Tuesday, June 5, 2012,

Moses has grown about 6cm in height since arriving in Lilongwe, doesn’t sound very much over 46 days but when you consider that it takes about 20 years to reach his full size it is about right. He appears to have got a bit thinner over the past couple of weeks but this is fairly normal when increasing in height – rather like children do and he is still not considered thin for an elephant of this age.

He started to develop a slight problem with his skin flaking in a few places i...

2nd of April 2012 - update

Posted by Jenny Webb on Tuesday, June 5, 2012,

Moses continues to grow stronger and is becoming more self confident in that he will now wander around the house on his own – leaving which ever “ mother” he is with for short periods of time and then coming back regularly to check that they are still where he left them. He does panic if the mother in question is not where he/she should be and so we all need to make sure that if we move position at all when he has wandered off that we first go to him and let him follow us to the new p...

He is now a month old and we have had him for 3 weeks

Posted by Jenny Webb on Tuesday, June 5, 2012,

Moses has now been with us for 3 weeks and we feel that we have crossed the first hurdle in that he has not had any adverse reactions to the milk formula and seems to have recovered from his trauma and is settled into his new routine. We still have a long way to go and lots of hurdles to cross before we can safely say that he will survive and he is still very vulnerable to disease and will be until he is at least a year old. With this in mind and the fact that he is a wild animal and a very...

My rescue

Posted by Jenny Webb on Wednesday, May 23, 2012,
On 26th Feb 2012 rangers at Vwaza Wildlife Reserve noticed a baby elephant on his own running around frantically trying to find his mother. The rangers monitored the baby and tried to locate the herd he belonged to without success.
On the 28th Feb the baby was found in the South Rukuru River, and was very weak and could not get out of the river. The rangers then decided to intervene and rescued the baby and asked 2 Italian tourists , Cecilia De Battaglia and Luca Oderra Beer Room if t...
